Manny Pacquiao Vs. Jeff Horn: 10 Things You Should Know About Saturday’s Fight
Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KO) is accustomed to fighting in the main event of pay-per-view cards, but on Saturday in Australia, the Filipino legend will be competing against hometown favorite and undefeated challenger Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KO) on network television.

Pacquiao will be defending his WBO welterweight title in a bout that fits nicely in a summer lineup of fights that should prove to be memorable. Here are the 10 things you should know about the Pacquiao vs. Horn fight.

How To Watch

The fight will be broadcast live from Brisbane, Australia by ESPN. Yes, you read that right. The former home for up-and-coming and washed-up fighters is now set to be a spot for the best boxers under the Top Rank promotion. Bob Arum, the President of Top Rank, has swung a deal with the network that will showcase fighters from the promotion.

n August, two of Arum’s best fighters and arguably a couple of the elite boxers in the world, Terence Crawford and Vasyl Lomachenko will defend their titles on ESPN as well.

Pacquiao is a Big-Time Favorite

Pacquiao comes into the fight as a minus-1000 favorite to defeat Horn. The challenger is a plus-650 underdog.

Televised Undercard
There will be another title on the line on the undercard. Jerwin Ancajas will defend his IBF junior bantamweight title against Teiru Kinoshita. The son of the legendary Sugar Shane Mosley is also in action. He’ll kick off the televised portion of the undercard against David Toussaint.Horn is a 29-year-old undefeated welterweight, but few outside boxing’s hardcore community know him. Horn has never fought outside of Australia, which partially explains his lack of notoriety. He’s also never faced anyone you’d consider a household name. In his last fight, he stopped Ali Funeka in six rounds. The most noteworthy victim on Horn’s resume is a shopworn Randall Bailey.

Horn stopped the hard-punching Bailey when the veteran couldn’t answer the bell for the seventh round. It should be noted, Bailey scored a knockdown in the third round of the fight. It was a legitimate knockdown and Horn was wobbled momentarily, but he recovered and finished strong.

What Does This Fight Being Broadcast on ESPN mean for Pacquiao’s Career?

Pacquiao is close to the end of his career. Arum knows it, so this deal with ESPN comes along at a great time. Pacquiao could still command a spot on a main event broadcast with the right opponent, but his days as an automatic pay-per-view draw–regardless of the competition–are probably over.

That said, Pacquiao is still set to make a reported $10 million for the fight compared to $500,000 for Horn.

Weights

Both men were on weight for the fight. Pacquiao weighed in at 145.7 pounds and Horn at 146.3.

Age and Experience Disparity

Pacquiao isn’t just nine years older than Horn, he’s also fought in a whopping 50 more fights and boxed 349 more rounds than his opponent. That’s one of the biggest experience gaps you’ll see in a championship bout. One that trumped it was Orlando Salido vs. Lomachenko back in 2014, but that was deceiving because of the latter’s extensive amateur career.

This is a legit landslide in Pacquiao’s favor as it pertains to experience.

Who Could Be Next

A Pacquiao win would likely set him up for another huge payday and an opponent worthy of a pay-per-view spot. Pacquiao and his camp would love another crack at Floyd Mayweather and the payday that goes along with that, but the pay-per-view king has not discussed fighting beyond his August 26 bout with UFC champion Conor McGregor.

Expect to hear names like Keith Thurman, Errol Spence, Adrien Broner (should he beat Mikey Garcia) and even Top Rank stablemate Crawford as potential opponents if Pacquiao gets past Horn.

If Horn wins, there is a rematch clause so he may have to fight Pacquiao again–assuming the latter continues his career.

Is Pacquiao Looking Past Horn?

All of the odds point to an easy Pacquiao win. He has a massive edge in experience and his speed–should he maintain what he’s had in the past–might overwhelm Horn. At the most recent press conference prior to the fight, Pacquiao could barely contain his laughter as he engaged in a staredown with Horn.

That beckons the question, is he taking his opponent lightly? I believe Pac-Man could be in a dangerous place.

Predictions

That’s not a typo in the graphic above. I am officially going out on a major limb and predicting a huge upset victory for Horn. Pacquiao seems disconnected, pre-occupied and less than motivated for this fight. Horn has everything to gain and nothing to lose in the biggest opportunity of his life.

He also has a big right hand and he’s shown a commitment to attacking his opponent’s body. Unlike my colleagues, I believe he can catch Pacquiao slipping and change the course of his life with the biggest upset in the sport this year.

Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn headline a strong undercard at the Battle of Brisbane
Legendary Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao faces a unique challenge Saturday, as he faces welterweight challenger Jeff Horn in his backyard of Australia. The fight is expected to be in front of the largest live crowd that Pacquiao has boxed, with Suncorp Stadium housing upwards of 60,000 people. Suncorp actually had to get a permit to increase its capacity, as the event is viewed by many Australians as the biggest boxing event in the country’s history. This will mark Pacquiao’s third fight since his infamous bout with Floyd Mayweather in 2015. The 38-year old went 2-0 in 2016, decisively defeating Timothy Bradley Jr., followed by a win over Jessie Vargas where Pacquiao reclaimed the WBO welterweight title that he lost to Mayweather. Other events on the card include Shane Mosley Jr. and Michael Conlan defending their super middleweight and super bantamweight titles, respectively. Conlan is a huge favorite over Jarrett Owen in his fight, while oddsmakers are giving David Toussaint a fighting chance against Mosley Jr. Jerwin Ancajas is also a heavy favorite over Teiru Kinoshita to hold onto his super flyweight belt, it is anticipated to be a breakout fight for Ancajas. Here’s how the full card shakes out.

Undercard fights will begin on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. Pacquiao-Horn is expected to commence at 11:30 p.m. ET.
